Multimillion Dollar Pink Diamonds in Auction
Pink diamonds are one of the rarest and most valuable gemstones in the world. In fact, they are so rare that many people have never even seen one in person. But why are these diamonds so valuable?
The first thing to understand is that all diamonds are rare. However, pink diamonds are even rarer than the average diamond. Scientists estimate that only one in every 10,000 diamonds is a naturally occurring pink diamond. This rarity alone makes pink diamonds incredibly valuable.
But scarcity is not the only factor that makes pink diamonds so valuable. These diamonds are also renowned for their exquisite beauty. Unlike yellow or white diamonds, pink diamonds are not just graded for their clarity and carat weight, but also for their color. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the foremost authority on diamond grading, uses a color grading system that ranges from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). However, for pink diamonds the GIA uses a different grading system that takes into account the intensity of the pink color.
The more intense the pink color, the higher the value of the diamond. Pink diamonds can range in color from a pale pink (known as a “light pink” diamond) to a deep, vivid pink (known as a “fancy vivid” pink diamond). The latter is the rarest and most valuable of all pink diamonds.
The allure of pink diamonds is often tied to their romantic symbolism and collectable value. Therefore, we often see pink diamonds in world class Auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s.
